David Gewirtz, a computer scientist, lecturer, journalist, and author at ZDNet, took a look at the most popular programming language in the market and what that actually means. Gewirtz developed a pretty encompassing list that uses data from PYPL (PopularitY of Programming Language), which looks at the popularity of language tutorials on Google, plus TIOBE, which uses search engine aggregates to calculate popularity, and IEEE Jobs, IEEE Open, and IEEE Trending. Gewirtz’s list can be considered the ultimate in choice for programming languages as it is based on many online parameters. The list is as given below: The list is deduced from the following chart :

The programming languages apparently have grouped themselves into primary, secondary, and third-tier languages. As we can see from above, the primary group which includes languages such Java, C, Python, and C++ are the most popular by far, as they are universal languages and are not tied to a specific programming platform or focus. The secondary group comprises of Javascript, C#, PHP, and Swift, which are mainly web development languages. While C# is a Microsoft-centric language, Swift is Apple’s new main coding language. Basically, the secondary group is platform-specific.

Lastly, the third-tier group includes Objective-C and R. For coders who are beginners, Gewirtz recommends them to start off with either C++ or Java, and then move into JavaScript. Later, depending on the work you want to do, you can try getting into PHP, Swift, or Python. Now you know why most wannabe programmers prefer Java!
